Well, you may have seen them lurking in the backgrounds of
our pictures, so it’s time for some formal introductions. These guys are Turk & JD. I grew up in
the woods, and we always had cats to keep down the mice. You might pet one on the way by for a few
minutes, but they were strictly outdoor.
Patrick never had cats.
During our last year at Western we were fortunate enough to
get the opportunity to house sit at a B&B in a gorgeous old house. We were there for about 6 months, and we were
in charge of taking care an 18 year old, 24lb cranky black cat named Inky. Inky didn’t like me, I was the one that came
in to vacuum every week, which is how were given the opportunity to house
sit. Inky adored Patrick, and he adored
her. Inky was ridiculous, she’d heave herself up to a chair to take a nab at
your bacon, or crawl inside your bag of chips if they were left on the
table. Our last few quarters at Western
classes were brutal. We kept telling ourselves, we just have to get through,
then we can move, get jobs, get our own place, and get our own cats. It seems silly, but cats were our carrot, our
light at the end of the tunnel.
We graduated, I worked hard to find a job, and we found a
great starter rental house. We settled
in, and our friends mom was fostering kittens, we were hoping to get a pair of
them. That didn’t work out, but it’s a good thing that it didn’t or we never
would have gotten our boys. We were
looking on craigslist in early October. Normally Craigslist is flooded with
postings of people begging you to take their kittens off their hands. There was
only one post that day, and it was for an adoptathon at the Petco in Covington,
about 10-15 minutes away. The event was ending in 15 minutes. Again, Patrick said “I’ll get the keys,” and
we hauled over there. We wanted one boy,
and one girl. There were two sets of siblings, two sisters from one litter, two
brothers from another. Patrick had never had cats before, as I said, and he
really wanted the boys, so that’s what we did. We signed our forms, paid the
best $185 we’ve ever spent, and took our boys home. They were quiet the whole way home. They
cuddled each other and purred all the way. We love them to death, it hasn’t
always been easy, but we wouldn’t trade them for anything!
